FIRST LEGO® League Goes “Green” with 2007 “Power Puzzle” Challenge

More than 100,000 students in 38 countries gear up to help solve the world’s energy problems!

This year’s "Power Puzzle" Challenge calls for teams of students, ages 9 to 14, to use robotics to understand and create solutions for one of today’s most critical environmental issues: energy management and conservation.

With missions exploring solar panels on houses, hydro-dams, wind turbines and planting trees, teams will have to program LEGO MINDSTORMS robots to find sustainable options to meet our planet’s growing energy needs in environmentally sound ways.

“The environment is a huge concern for everyone, including kids,” said Dean Kamen, FIRST founder. "Giving them a hands-on experience that allows them to use their imaginations and creativity in combination with science and technology to solve a real-world problem is empowering. It captures the true spirit of FIRST LEGO League and unleashes the creative problem-solving skills today’s kids need for building a better tomorrow."

“FIRST LEGO League so brilliantly captures the natural curiosity and creativity of youth, and combines it with real-world issues and research and teamwork activities that put children in a position of identifying and creating innovative solutions to big problems,” said Jens Maibom, vice president, LEGO Group. “In this manner, FIRST LEGO League inspires children around the world to realize the power of their creative thinking skills in making a real difference, which naturally makes them feel good and motivates them to continue learning by doing.”

Currently in its tenth year, FIRST LEGO League anticipates its biggest season ever, with more than 10,000 teams in 38 countries competing in hundreds of qualifying events and Championship Tournaments. More than 100,000 students will compete to win honors and recognition. Teams will also have the opportunity to participate at the FIRST LEGO League World Festival, to be held in conjunction with the FIRST Championship, April 17-19, 2008 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia.

4th NXTLOG Building Challenge Winners!

The NXTLOG Summer Building Challenge had over 50 fun entries. Please view and comment on all the amazing entries to this competition by entering the tag "NXT200708"

Here are the winners (drum roll please):

CHAMPION'S AWARD
Mr. NXT
Created by: Buckskinn92

Mr. NXT is designed to keep you company on a summer holiday. Buckskinn92’s inspiration for Mr. NXT comes from PANGOLIN2’s humanoid "Simon" robot. All the pieces are from the MINDSTORMS NXT set (except for the hat, bowtie, and wheels used to move the hat). Mr. NXT speaks, tells jokes, raises his hat, lowers his eyebrows, frowns, and says "please stop" when he has had enough. For Buckskinn92’s excellent concept, design, robot performance, programming, and NXTLOG documentation, Mr. NXT wins the Champion's award! (This is Buckskinn92’s 5th project on NXTLOG.)

ROBOT DESIGN AWARD
Mini Portable Pinball
Created by: quy

The Mini Portable Pinball’s sleek symmetry made this project worthy of the Robot Design Award. quy was inspired by many pinball machines on NXTLOG. This machine has many cool features like score keeping, high score keeping, portability, and two touch sensors (to move the flippers). The machine even uses LEGO Zamor Spheres as the balls. We all would love to have this compact NXT Pinball Machine! (quy has 22 projects on NXTLOG.)

ROBOT PERFORMANCE AWARD
Summer Lounge-a-bot
Created by: AIRKRAFT

The Summer Lounge-a-bot is as an automated deckchair chair and fan in one. This bot wins the Robot Performance Award for its creative functions. When someone wishes to use the Summer Lounge-a-bot they must swipe a colored card under the scanner (the light sensor). If the first attempt is successful, then the brick will sing to you and the Lounge-a-bot program will start. (AIRKRAFT has 6 projects on NXTLOG.)

CREATIVE USE OF NXTLOG AWARD
Summer Server
Created by: BInary42

The Summer Server serves you what you want when you are too hot to get it yourself. This robot will find you (with the help of the Ultrasonic Sensor), and when it knows you are in front of it, the Summer Server will lower the cup or bowl to make the gesture "here have some.” BInary42 clearly documents this project. BInary42 also submitted a second project for the Summer Building Challenge worth viewing and commenting on: Summer Game Player . (BInary42 has 6 projects on NXTLOG)
