LEGO Autopilot First Flight

LEGO MINDSTORMS takes to the sky!

Chris Anderson and his kids had their first successful test flight of their R/C plane with a LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT autopilot, a LEGO pan-tilt camera, and an infrared autostabilization system.

"The good news is that a) it didn't crash, and b) it works," says Anderson. "Everything worked well enough that we're able to see what we have to improve, which is the definition of a successful test."

Chris has set up a DIY Drones blog that has video clips from that flight as well as more information. We can't wait to see results from future flights!

LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Inducted into the Robot Hall of Fame

The Robot Hall of Fame recognizes excellence in robotics technology worldwide and honors the fictional and real robots that have inspired and made breakthrough accomplishments in robotics. The Robot Hall of Fame was created by Carnegie Mellon University in April 2003 to call attention to the increasing contributions from robots to human society.

Matt Mason, director of Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute, says this year's crop is notable because the real machines outnumber the fictional creations for the first time. "As much as we love fictional robots such as Data, those of us in the robotics field take heart when the real accomplishments of our colleagues get this well-deserved recognition," Mason said.

This year’s four inductees include the one-legged Raibert Hopper, the NavLab 5 self-steering vehicle, LEGO® MINDSTORMS NXT and Lieutenant Commander Data.

LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT "did more to take creative robotics to the masses than just about any other retail product," said juror Illah Nourbakhsh, associate professor in Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute.

Juror Joanna Haas, director of Pittsburgh's Carnegie Science Center, agrees. "LEGO has made robotics truly accessible to a broad audience — children and adults alike — and the MINDSTORMS sub-brand supports wildly popular play and learning in homes, classrooms and museums all around the world."

NXTLOG has reached 2000 robots! Number 2000 goes to...

We have been searching through the most creative MINDSTORMS NXT designs submitted NXTLOG to showcase as number 2000. We are happy to announce that NXTLOG 2000 goes to first time NXTLOGger... gateway57.

The project is called, "gateway57s first project!" and this NXT vehicle has a cool front bumper design, four wheels in the front (which are geared up for speed), a ball that holds up the back, and it uses a LEGO Exo-Force disk shooter! (A 4-peg gear attached to a third motor flips the leaver on the shooter.)

Welcome gateway57 to NXTLOG. Congratulations on being number 2000, and we hope to see more NXT projects from you!

Runners up in this competition at 1999 and 2001 are:

1999: Flat-Bot "Flounder" creatd by dringo72 must be the flattest NXT robot possible!

2001: EtchBot by Indywin is a beautifully designed robot that not only holds a small etch-a-sketch, but it can draw on it too.

Do You Cube? NXT Rubik's Cube Solver

Solving a Rubik's Cube is fun, but designing and programming a robot that can solve it is an ultimate challenge!

JP Brown's LEGO MINDSTORMS RCX Rubik's Cube solver continues to be innovative and impressive. Now MDP Daniele Benedettelli has created a MINDSTORMS NXT Generation cube solver inspired by the original.

The NXT Rubik's Cube Solver robot uses 1 NXT, 3 motors, 2 touch sensors, 1 light sensor, and a webcam to scan the cube faces. Danny experimented with a few complex designs using 2 NXT's and up to 5 touch sensors before settling on the design he is sharing on NXTLOG.
