NXTLOG is reaching 2000 unique MINDSTORMS NXT Projects. Will it be yours?

NXTLOG is on the verge of reaching 2000 NXT robots! Gather your NXT components and get ready to submit your best and most creative design. The NXTLOG moderators will freeze NXTLOG submissions when the number hits 1999 and will then choose the robot that best demonstrates the true LEGO Mindstorms NXT creative spirit. Will number 2000 be yours?

What’s NXT? Imagine building a LEGO MINDSTORMS robot that can… fly!

Someone is making a MINDSTORMS robot that can fly?!?

That’s just what Chris Anderson (editor of WIRED Magazine) is working on. He's invented an autopilot system for a radio controlled model airplane that uses LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT to steer the plane and a HiTechnic compass sensor to tell the autopilot where to go.

The LEGO Autopilot (as Chris calls it) also uses a MINDSTORMS NXT touch sensor to turn the autopilot on and off in the air. The sensor button is pushed by a radio-controlled servo motor to control the movement of the plane’s rudder. This autopilot is a "return bot." When engaged, it turns the aircraft 180 degrees (thanks to the compass sensor) to point back at the launch area and keeps the plane level until the human pilot regains manual control.

According to Chris, the next stage of the project is to integrate GPS navigation with an onboard GPS receiver that communicates with MINDSTORMS NXT via Bluetooth. The final stage is to include the ability to upload new GPS waypoints and reporting position back to the ground with text messages on an on-board cellphone (also communicating with MINDSTORMS through Bluetooth)!

Calling all FLL Robots!

Attention all FLL teams, The LEGO MINDSTORMS team has an assignment for you! You have worked hard this season preparing and testing your robots for the Nano Quest challenge. Now your robot needs a turn in the spotlight… online! We want you to post your super fantastic FLL robots on LEGO MINDSTORMS.com.

Show off how you designed, developed, programmed, and tested your robot and view and comment on other FLL and NXT models invented by the LEGO MINDSTORMS community on NXTLOG.

NXTLOG is easy to use and it’s FREE. You just need to create a username and password on LEGO.com. You can even try using your FLL team name as your NXTLOG username.

On NXTLOG you'll create an online archive of your team’s FLL robot(s). You can upload pictures, .rbt program files, and descriptions of your robot and team.

Make sure that when you add your FLL robot to NXTLOG that you TAG it “FLL” - that way all visitors to NXTLOG can easily search and see NXT robots created for FLL.

NXTLOG is only open to NXT models, but we will allow RCX models that are designed for FLL tournaments.

While you are at NXTLOG, search through thousands of unique LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT robots created by members of the MINDSTORMS community.

We can’t wait to see your robots!

2007 FIRST LEGO League World Festival Highlights

"3, 2, 1, LEGO!" It was an exhilarating two days at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia, USA as 94 teams from around the globe competed in the 2007 FIRST LEGO League (FLL) World Festival.

Top honors went to Champion's Award 1st Place winner, Team 1031 "Pigmice" from Portland, Oregon; and Champion's Award 2nd Place winner, Team 1677 "Access 9" from South Bend, Indiana. The Champion's Award measures how teams inspire and motivate others about the excitement and wonders of science and technology, while demonstrating gracious professionalism.

Members of the LEGO MINDSTORMS team and the MDP (MINDSTORMS Developer Program) were on hand at the LEGO MINDSTORMS booth and in the pits interacting with FLL and JFF teams and familes demonstrating and playing with NXT bots, and helping to answer lots of questions about LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT.

MDP Steve Hassenplug brought a number of his NXT bots including the Omni (documented on NXTLOG). MDP Bryan Bonahoom enjoyed chatting with teams and demonstrating his W.O.P.R. (Tic-Tac-Toe playing NXT robot). The NXT Step Blogger and MDP Jim Kelly was helping out demonstarting robots in the neighboring LEGO Education booth. Wiz kid, robotics enthusiast, and FLL team mentor Jay Kinzie showed off his extensive LEGO MINDSTORMS knowledge and an amazing NXT Crane he invented. Alpha Rex and Spike were there too dancing and "stinging!"

Also present was Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, Chairman of LEGO. He and LEGO MINDSTORMS Director Søren Lund jumped into the fun and battled it out with two remote controlled NXT Zamor Sphere Shooters based off MDP Brian Davis' DAZLR.

Special thanks to all FLL staff and volunteers, the LEGO MINDSTORMS team and fans, as well as the FLL and JFLL teams and families who helped make the 2007 FLL World Festival a fun and memorable event!

FIRST LEGO League World Festival, 12-14 April

The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) World Festival is held annually at the Georgia Dome and the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The festival marks the conclusion of the past season’s round of competitions around the world, with a tournament celebration of this year’s theme, Nano Quest, where the children on the teams have been challenged to explore the impact of nano technology on our society.

At the World Festival you will also have an opportunity to meet members of the LEGO MINDSTORMS team from the LEGO headquarters, who will be showing fun models from the new LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT robotics toolset, together with expert users. You can find us in the pit area.

See you there!
