NXTLOG SMART MOVE Building Challenge Winners

NXTLOG SMART MOVE Building Challenge Winners

05/05/2010

In honor of the close of the 2009-2010 FIRST LEGO League Robotics Season, the March-April NXTLOG challenge was to design a LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT transportation device of the future! NXTLOGgers were challenged to look at their communities and discover how people, animals, information, and things travel; and then and improve it through a MINDSTORMS NXT robot design prototype. See the winners of this challenge below, but you can see all the entrants by searching the tag "smartmove" on NXTLOG.

Here are the winners:

HUMAN TRANSPORT
Bob's SM#X
Created by: bobo9711

There were many entries in this category, but what set this winner apart was an innovative focus on human safety that car companies should pay attention to. Did you know that at least forty percent of all car accidents are caused by distracted drivers not looking at the road and smashing into something? bobo9711's SM#X vehicle has an ultrasonic sensor on the front that will sense when obstacles and will stop the car from crashing. This project is posted in parts, so it's best viewed from bobo9711's profile page.

ANIMAL TRANSPORT
RCAC
Created by: NXTein1996

NXTein1996's RC-AC is designed to be used in airports, vetrinary clinics, and humane societies when animals need to be transported safely. The robot follows a route drawn by lines on the ground, and if someone or something gets in its way, it will stop and wait until the object moves. An operator controls the steering of all the crates on the vehicle using the Remote Control feature on the NXT 2.0 software. A nice hybrid autonomous/remote controlled robot for safe and efficient animal transport!

INFORMATION TRANSPORT
Paper Plane Flinger
Created by: Constructivator

The winner of this category should also get a fun teacher award, as we would have loved to have a Paper Plane Flinger (PPF) in our school to make passing notes much easier! Constructivator came up with the idea for this project when students started to build and have contests with paper planes in the classroom. The PPF robot has a long arm that catapults a paper plane into the air. It also has a sturdy base for the NXT brick and touch sensor to trigger the launch. We hope your students get to test this :)

CARGO CARRIER
ELEPHANTIASIS !!!
Created by: superdragon1000

Taking inspiration from the animal world, superdragon1000's cargo carrier robot imitates an elephant! This robotic vehicle is designed to pick up up huge things with its trunk and transport them safely. One exception is that superdragon1000 claims this robot moves faster than an elephant.
