Body Forward Challenge Winners

06/05/2011

To celebrate the 2011 FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Body Forward World Festival in St Louis, Mo., USA, the March-April NXTLOG challenge was to explore the world of Biomedical Engineering! NXTLOGgers were encouraged to find innovative ways robots can be used to repair injuries, help people overcome illnesses and disabilities, and build healthier, stronger bodies. Entries included bionic limbs, heart sensors, nanobots that can detect bad blood cells, and innovative machines that can be used in a medical lab or hospital. We could only highlight a few winners based on our judging criteria, but make sure to visit, comment, rate, and get inspired by all the entries by searching the tag "bodyforward."

Here are the winners:

LABORATORY DEVICE AWARD
This award goes to the user who created the most innovative biomedical device to be used in a laboratory to help improve the work of research scientists.

Centrifuge
Created by: PHIL7340

PHIL7340 created a MINDSTORMS NXT centrifuge that spins test tubes at high speeds to separate mixtures such as the solid and liquid parts of blood. The robot uses a 1:5 gear ratio to produce high speeds which are 5 times as fast as the standard NXT motor speed. PHIL7340 includes a great video and an LDD file so you can recreate this great lab device!

BIONICS AWARD
This award goes to the most innovative bionic body part.

RHS- The Ultimate Replacement Hand
Created by: kineticenergy

The RHS - The Ultimate Replacement Hand's purpose is to allow men and women in need of a replacement hand to be more capable of doing everyday tasks. It utilizes three motors to drive the fingers of the hand, using gears that pull a series of strings that run through each of the individual fingers, allowing them to close. The motors drive the thumb, the first and middle finger, and the ring and small finger. All three can be used to pick up objects of varying size or programmed to pick up specific objects using any combination of finger sets. In the future the hope is that the hand can be controlled by nerve signals from the brain. kineticenergy not only created an innovative way to move each finger set, but also provided a great program file and video of the hand's movements in action.

INTERNAL MEDICINE AWARD
This award goes to the most innovative Biomedical robotic device that cane be used inside the human body.

nanobot 1090
Created by: snowboarder1090

The nanobot 1090 is a model of a nanobot that can roam the blood stream and destroy any germs it encounters. The paddle on the back propels the robot in the blood stream and the wheels drive it every where else. With the aid of an ultrasonic sensor, the nanobot can also turn to avoid objects in its path.

EXTERNAL DEVICE AWARD
This award is for to the most creative design of a biomedical robot that can be used outside the human body.

MEDIAT-SYS
Created by: Photronic

The MEDIAT-SYS system screens patients by asking them questions about their health, and gives treatment or medical advice when a proper diagnosis is formed. It can also dispense a prescription, call a doctor or 911 for support. Photronic includes a great video of the MEDIAT-SYS in action. This invention could save patients lot of waiting time to see a doctor!
