FLL Team visits IBM's Almaden Research Center - Live Webcast June 26th

Team Pigmice from Portland, OR, 1st Place Champion's Award winners at the 2007 FIRST LEGO League World Festival, will be traveling to the world-famous Almaden Research Center in San Jose, CA on Tuesday, June 26.

The team will spend the day learning about a variety of nanoscience and technology research projects, meeting world-class scientists, and touring their laboratories. This will include a visit to the low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) lab, which has been referred to as the "Kitty Hawk of nanotechnology." It was there in 1989 that IBM Fellow and nanotechnology pioneer, Don Eigler, first positioned atoms one at a time, spelling out the letters I-B-M in xenon atoms. The Pigmice will even have the opportunity to take control of the historic STM themselves, and build their own atomic structures!

The Pigmice will also demonstrate their robot's performance and present their research project on using nanotechnology to monitor and remediate plastics in the Pacific Ocean. Tune into a live webcast and join the Pigmice in this incredible opportunity to share their research and ideas with these world-class scientists. The webcast will run from 11:15 AM - 12:00 Noon Pacific Time (2:15 - 3:00 PM Eastern Time) on Tuesday June 26th at: http://registration.mshow.com/legoteam

Dean Kamen, John Abele, Woodie Flowers, and Paul Gudonis will accompany the team on this historic visit.

This trip is made possible from a generous gift from IBM.

This award goes to:
Nanobot: An Entry In NXTLog Nanoquest
Created by: Newsboy912505

Newsboy912505 created Nanoquest two missions and mission models based off the world of Nanotechnology: "Alpha Decay," and "Magnetism Trouble." The robot design and performance were carefully and clearly documented in NXTLOG, and the mission models were creatively designed using LEGO bricks and LEGO X-Pods. Way to go Newsboy912505 you are a true NXT Champion! (Newsboy912505's has 31 projects on NXTLOG.)

ROBOT DESIGN AWARD
BSomerville's FLL robot!
Created by: BSomerville

BSomerville invented an FLL robot that could complete the "pizza" challenge (a challenge that is one of the original NanoQuest missions, but one that BSomerville recreated). "My main goal wasn't to make a robot that could complete tons of missions, but to make a tough, sturdy design that could complete one mission." And we believe BSomerville met that goal. We also like the dual purpose of the FLL robot in that you can carry it around just like a suitcase. Congratulations BSomerville! (BSomerville has 14 Projects on NXTOG.)

ROBOT PERFORMANCE AWARD
FLL Robot
Created by: ro1000

ro1000 also created a custom Nano Quest challenge and, "My goal was to get several "molecules" (balls) in the NXT testing pad in a very small amount of time." We applaud ro1000's success in completing this challenge efficiently and present the Robot Performance award! (ro1000 has 10 Projects on NXTLOG.)

CREATIVE USE OF NXTLOG AWARD
The Nano-Brickyard
Created by: Kang_the_Searat

Kang_the_Searat designed a very creative Nano Quest mission and based his robot in a Nano Brickyard! There are 5 minifigs that work in the Nano Brickyard along with the beautiful NXT robot Nancy the Nano-NXT! There's Foreman Franco, Rick Rocksaw (the Nano-brick sawer), Max Mega-Move (the Nano-Brick shifter), Ned Nano-Driller (who drills out the Nano-Bricks), and last, but not least, Crunch, who drives the Nano work-vehicle. Kang_the_Searat was not only creative with this NXT Contest entry, but is also discusses problems and challenges that were faced when constructing and programming this mission. For this creative effort, we award Kang_the_Searat the Creative Use of NXTLOG award. Congratulations! (This is Kang_the_Searat's 2nd NXTLOG project)

HONERABLE MENTION
