Ask the NXTperts - Tips from the NXTperts

Category:Hardware

April 2008

There are dozens of off the shelf sensors available that can add more ‘senses’ to your NXT creations and allowing NXT to get more feedback on what is happening in its surrounding.

More info on these sensors can be found here: LEGO, HiTechnic and Codatex.

The sensors are:

Infrared Sensor - detects infrared light sources and determines their direction and strength.
Infrared link Sensor - used to pair with other LEGO infrared devices.
Gyroscopic Sensor - measures rotation speed around one direction and is insensitive to gravity.
Color Sensor - measures different colors on objects.
Compass Sensor - gives a sense of direction - program your robot to follow a certain direction.
Accelerometer Sensor - recodes the direction of gravity and adds balance.
RFID Sensor - adds tag recognition (RFID) functionality to your NXT projects. This enables your robot to detect specific objects from others.

I live in New Zealand with my partner and four children. For fun, I am into robotics in a big way. My children and I spend a lot of time building robots with LEGO MINDSTORMS. My other interests include 4 wheel driving, mobile devices and mountain-biking.
