Ask the NXTperts - Tips from the NXTperts

Category:Beginner

April 2008

There are many places on the web to find building instructions for MINDSTORMS NXT robots, but where can you start?

MINDSTORMS.com/Building Instructions
One place to start is right here on MINDSTORMS.com. There are building instructions for a classic clock and a sound bot. You can also download programs (beginner and advanced) for both models.

NXTLOG
The best place on MINDSTORMS.com (and the web) for NXT building instructions is NXTLOG. There are over 5,000 NXT robots to search through, and lots of users have uploaded projects with LDD (LEGO Digital Designer) files. Each LDD file has a building instructions mode! You can search for LDD files on NXTLOG by entering the tag: LDD. Many users have also uploaded projects with step-by-step instructions using pictures, and most NXTLOG projects include program files.

nxtprograms.com
A favorite fan site of mine for building instructions is Dave Parker’s NXTprograms.com. There are dozens of robots here ranging from line-followers to baseball batters that you can build with the basic MINDSTORMS NXT #8527 kit. Dave uses pictures for the building instructions, and includes program files too.

MCP Websites
Some members of the MCP (MINDSTORMS Community Partners) have posted building instructions of their famous MINDSTORMS NXT creations on their personal websites. Here are a few:

nxtasy.org - NXT Repository/Projects/
On Guy Ziv’s blog you can find user contributed NXT projects with building instructions and programs.

philohome.com
MCP Philipe Hurbain has building instructions for his famous Legway, joystick, and his NXTiiMote. Philo sometimes uses specialty sensors and parts that are not included in the basic MINDSTORMS NXT set and which is not endorsed by LEGO.

mynxt.matthiaspaulscholz.eu
MCP Matthias Paul Scholz has building instructions and programs for 10 NXT robots (including a slug and an Jutta the Easter bunny).
